Sept 2005 - Aug 2006
25th September 2005: The year opened with 'The Brewood Wake', a rather wet Sunday afternoon in September.  The people of Brewood seem to turn out anyway in spite of the weather.
7th December 2005: It was the first time for a number of years that we went to Homebell House with a Christmas programme - we rounded the evening off by visiting 'Indigo', a local Indian restaurant, where we had a most enjoyable meal to end off the evening
13th December 2005: The Christmas Concert at Codsall Conservative Club was one of those very rare occasions when I did not conduct the concert as I was in Manchester at my daughters graduation ceremony.  Roz Butterworth conducted the concert and obviously did so well because they asked us back immediately for a return visit in the Spring
15th December 2005: We had our fair share of people getting lost on the way to concerts this year - especially pianists.  It was our first visit to St Aiden's Church, Walsall, where we entertained a small but enthusiastic and very appreciative audience with our Christmas programme.  Viv, our pianist for the evening got lost and arrived in the nick of time.
Wednesday 21st December 2005
The Brewood Singers Christmas Concert in the Church of St Mary & St Chad, Brewood, 8pm

For our main Christmas Concert this year we were joined by the Gnosall Hand Bell Ringers, who enhanced the Christmas feel to our concert.  We are always so well supported by the audiences in Brewood, and many regard this concert at being the real start of Christmas for them.
Carol Singing around the pubs in Brewood this year raised £286:31 inspite of a rather quiet night in terms of the number of people about.  Some brave members of the group also entertained the crowds outside the Molineux on Saturday 17th December at their invite (and their £100 donation)  Thanks to Wendy, Pat, Marianne, Sue, Anthea, Jen, Colette, Pam, Sylvia, Ish, David O and Don (with pitch pipe!)  for braving the elements.
27th November 2005: The 'Switching on of the Christmas Lights' in Brewood is another one of those occasions where the people of Brewood brave the elements (right at the end of November) and we sang a selection of Christmas Carols to 'open' the season, in the usual way.
22nd January 2006:  The concert for the Phoenix Club at Codsall Village Hall must go down as one of the most stressful concerts.  It should have been a lovely relaxed afternoon concert.  We waited, and waited, and waited - no pianist.  Pam had got completely lost.  We decided to start - Roz conducting, me playing the piano.  Many choirs might have already given up at this stage and gone home, but not The Brewood Singers!  I had left my music on the conductor's stand & I used the pianist music.   I was doing the announcements from by the piano on the stage.  Jen had sorted the music for the pianist, not without error in the order.  We started.  My order was different and therefore as I came to announce the items, The Singers waited in anticipation and frantically shuffled papers to find the right music.  We had agreed that I would conduct the unaccompanied items.  I left the piano to take up my usual position to conduct.  Where was the music I left on the stand?  Roz had moved it!!  Eventually I got it back, found the piece and put the music on the stand.  At this point the stand collapsed, and so did the audience, in fits of laughter!!   At least this concert gave my daughter, Anna her first solo as she joined The Singers for 'I Am A Small Part Of The World'.  Pam never made it to the concert - she couldn't find the hall.  She has now invested in a satellite navigation system for the car!  Perhaps I ought to invest in yet another new music stand!
April 1st 2006: Singers Spring Concert with Ogmore Valley Male Voice Choir, in the Church of S.S. Mary & Chad, Brewood - 7.30pm.

It was good to meet up with our old friends once more from the Ogmore Valley in South Wales, when they came up to join us in concert.  The concert was really good, but the audience were smaller than anticipated on this occasion.  We enjoyed it though, and especially the 'afterglow' in the Jubilee Hall.  (See photos)  Our thanks go to the ladies (mainly) who provided the food and for David Shannon for organising the 'drink'.  The Ogmore MVC presented us with their latest 'photo'.  We will need to think of something for the 'return match' next year.
April 11th 2006: Codsall Conservative Club.  This was our second visit of the year to Codsall Conservative Club - but my first.  We were made most welcome.  Not an easy room to sing in, but we were really made to feel at home.  I shall always remember the line of beer pumps - for about 20 real ales.  These were preparations for a beer festival, so were not functioning (shame!)  Nevertheless a good time was still had by all.
The Brewood Singers Summer Concert with The Shrewsbury Light Orchestra - Saturday June 24th in the Church of S.S. Mary & Chad, Brewood

What a lovely evening we had with the Shrewsbury Light Orchestra.  They produced a wonderful programme of music which, complemented by ourselves made a wonderful concert.  They were such a friendly group of people and we had a large  audience.   We finished with 'Land of Hope & Glory and Jerusalem, after doing 'Speed Your Journey' with The Singers and The Orchestra.
The Brewood Singers Concert at St Michael's Church, Madeley, Telford, with guests, The Abraham Darby Showband - Saturday 1st July 2006

Forever, this evening will be remembered for the day England was knocked out of the World Cup by Portugal.  The mood of the concert was rather subdued to start with, but after I apologized for starting the concert with 'Come Let Us Join Our Celebration', the mood lightened and we enjoyed yet another evening of music.  This was a joint concert but both the church and The Singers decided to give their third of the takings to Abraham Darby School who were saving up for a visit to Carnegie Hall in 2007.
We have had some wonderful concerts this year and the standard of singing within the group is as good as ever.  Many come to our concerts and say we get better every time.  If you have never been to a Singers concert, perhaps we might see you next season.

Our last Brewood Singers Concert before our summer break was at a very small village between Brewood and Telford called Church Eaton on Friday July 9th.  We opened the 'Village Festival' for them this evening with a concert. It's only a small church and we were told only to expect a small audience because of the size of the place. The village was decked with 'scarecrows' and other 'lifesize figures' in gardens, by the roadside and in the church grounds. The unusual thing about the church is that it is dedicated to St Editha of Polesworth.  The coincidence is that I live in Polesworth an am also organist and choirmaster at the Abbey Church.  St Editha, Abbess of Polesworth, is not a well known saint, and apart from Polesworth and Church Eaton, I know not of any other church dedicated to our Saint Editha (-there are plenty other St. Editha's though).

I was a little worried to start with when there were only about ten people seated five minutes before we started, not really being aware that there were about 50 others convivially drinking glasses of wine outside.  With wine available before, during and after the concert, the importance of the two health and safety notices: 'don't put glasses on the front ledge of the pew in case anyone sits back and knocks it off', and 'if you need to go to the loo see Michael at the back and he will open his house', became only too obvious. The audience were 'very relaxed' possible helped by the vino. They seem to thoroughly enjoy the concert and was a lovely end to the season. This is obviously how they do things at St Editha's, Church Eaton - sounds good to me.
