This year we welcome Nick Wiley as our accompanist and thank Lee Haddock for his work during his time with us as accompanist. To start with, Steve Cooper will be helping out a little while Nick 'learns the ropes', with a little help from Pam (friend of Jen's). We do, however, need Steve to sing tenor. While I'm on the subject, we are short of tenors and basses but have a small waiting list for ladies. If you are reading this and sing tenor or bass and can make Thursday night practices in Brewood, then do get in touch. The shortage of male singers generally is really rather a pity. So many groups are in the same situation. I think a lot of people hear the Singers and perhaps think they are not good enough. If you are new to all this then do not worry, at least give it a go.
We have started off gently this year, particularly in view of the hectic year we had during 2000 - 2001. Thursday October 25th 2001 was officially declared Curry Night. After practice as many of us who could summon up the energy - the majority of us actually - visited 'Ye Olde Brewood Curry House' (the actual name escapes me at the moment) after finishing practice at 10pm for a late night Indian meal. It was a good night, and I hope we will repeat the experience sometime in the future.
Steve played for Uttoxeter and Wall Heath and Pam played for the County Showground and the main Christmas Concert in Brewood Church. Christmas went well and we were pleased to welcome the Little Aston Hand Bell Ringers as our guests in Brewood Church. It was really rather a pity we did not manage to sing at the Switching on of the Brewood Christmas Lights or at Tong this year, but I'm sure there with be other times. It is sometimes good to have a rest.
We did the Carol Singing on 15th December 2001 with some repeating the experience at Connoisseurs on 22nd December. We raised just about £400 (with Christmas Card money) for the Special Needs Playground in Wolverhampton, and presented the cheque at practice one night in February. Here are some photo's:
Thursday 31st January 2002 we abandoned practice in favour of meal at Connoisseurs Restaurant in Brewood. The fare was good - and very reasonable priced. It does make it less expensive when the restaurant does not have a licence for selling alcoholic drinks but when you are allowed to take your own. We all came armed with our bottles of 'whatever' and a good time was had by all. Roz made up a quiz based upon our musical repertoire, which was much appreciated. More Photo's:
Nick and Steve shared the concert at Homebell House and for the Cambrian Society (at which Nick accompanied most of the pieces) and both concerts went well.
The concert in the Jubilee Hall 'Sing and Swing' with our guests, Abraham Darby Jazz Band (Saturday 20thApril 2002) went really well, and so did the tickets - a sell out. The Jazz band played very well and was very popular with the audience. We didn't do too badly either and the concert balance out very well.

One of the highlights this year must have been the concert in the summer with our guests, the Stefnir Male Voice Choir from Iceland (July 10th). They were visiting the UK on tour for about 8 days and were singing at the Llangollen Eisteddfodd as well as doing a concert with us, a concert with Bangor Male Voice Choir and a concert with the Ogmore Valley Male Voice Choir. It was a most memorable concert (photo below) and the resulting CD was our first venture into this sort of thing. Apart from the individual items performed by both choirs, I will remember the combined items at the end - 'Speed your journey' and the wonderful Pakkarbaen. Thanks also to South Staffordshire Council for their £150 grant towards publicity - the Singers are encouraged that South Staffs are acknowledging our work and supporting us.
