We have had such a busy year this year,
starting with the Brewood Wake in September. Despite the poor weather we still managed to perform, although I erected a gazebo to safeguard the clavinova and to save me from getting wet. The Singers all stood under the arch entrance to the Swan car park. The autumn continued with concerts at The Bonded Warehouse, Stourbridge (21st October 2000) and Homebell House (1st November 2000).
We performed at the Switching on of the Brewood Christmas Lights (Sunday 26th November 2000) and did a concert at Royal Agricultural Showground, Stafford (Tuesday 5th December 2000).
Amongst all this, in the autumn we also practised and performed on a number of occasions with the choirs from the schools in Brewood, for the Best Village Award. Brewood got through to the final - the last presentation was in the Jubilee Hall on 22nd November. Unfortunately Brewood did not win, but did very well to get to the finals.
I will remember for a long time our performance at the Fosters Garden Centre, Penkridge (Thursday 7th December 2000). Not that the performance itself was particularly memorable, but the evening was wet. Not only was I late in arriving as the traffic was so bad, but I got absolutely soaked running from the car to the centre. At the end of the performance I remember following in convoy, headed by Norman, on our way to the Bradford Arms for a pre-Christmas Meal, and thinking, I wouldn't be surprised if we got stuck in a flood. It was, however a most relaxing end to a very difficult evening travelling.
As we drew close to Christmas, our Concert at Tong for the British Digestive Foundation (14th December 2000) got us in the mood for our main Annual Carol Concert - (21st December 200 at St Mary & St Chad's Parish Church, Brewood). The Carol Concert in Brewood was, once more, so well attended and it was another brilliant evening.
After Christmas Pat Mumford invited us all to her house for a 'Cheese & Wine' Social Evening) on Saturday 10th February 2001. It was a really good evening and we had the opportunity to join in with one or two games. Our Jumble Sale in the Jubilee Hall was on 3rd March - thanks for those who helped on the day and for those who came to support us.
One of the first things I did after coming out of hospital after pituitary surgery, was to write a report to South Staffs about what we had done with the grant they gave us May 2000. The money was very useful. If you really want to know all the details on how we spent the money, our final letter to South Staffs is linked here [LINK TO FINAL LETTER]
The concert at Old Hill for the Leasowes Physically Handicapped (30th March 2001) was my first concert after coming out of hospital after the pituitary surgery. I thought it was going to be a difficult one when I saw the size of the hall, but when we started singing, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it came over.
It was really good to work with Tommy Mundon again, who was our guest for our Spring Concert (Saturday 7th April 2001 in the Jubilee Hall, Brewood). The last time we worked with him was some years before at Penkridge when we did a concert with the K & J Male Voice Choir. The concert was really well supported and we had to try and reorganise the chairs just before the start in order to get more people in!
On the evening of May 12th, I thought Carol was taking me out for a meal to celebrate my 50th birthday, so the Party in the Memorial Hall, Polesworth, was a real surprise. It was so good to see many of the Singers, who joined with so many other friends. The Singers rendition of 'Thanks for the Music' was particularly memorable and the ladies barbershop also sang us a number. Thank you so much for all the gifts and to Carol and Dave Butcher for organising it (it was June Butcher's birthday do too.)
A few days later we're back on the concert trail. This time at St Joseph's Church, Merryhill, Wolverhampton (19th May 2001). The concert at the Parish Church of St Mary & St Chad, Brewood as guests of the Abraham Darby School Bands (9th June 2001) was another on of those unforgettable occasions. The bands were really good - in fact, probably the best school bands I have ever heard - they were better than some authority central ensembles. We didn't do too bad either and everyone was most impressed with all contributions.
The Concert at Dean Street, Brewood for Compton Hospice (28th June 2001) must go down as being one of our worst performances!! We were singing in a marquee and could not hear the accompaniment very well. Without any amplification the sound just seem to get swallowed up. The marquee seemed very long and narrow and I don't know whether it way my imagination but an awful lot of people seemed to sit near the back. Never mind -we don't often get a bad one!
Well it really has been a busy year - time for a Holiday I think!
We are soon back in Polesworth again for our last concert of the year. (Concert at the Abbey Church of St Editha, Polesworth, North Warwickshire (7th July 2001)). This concert was delightful, and although the audience was small, we were very much appreciated. I do think we over stretched ourselves at the Abbey this summer having so many events on within a very short period of time.
