What an excellent year we have had this year
All our concerts are listed above. Some of them have links with more information, so click away.
Apart from our concerts we have started selling pens, pencils and key fobs. We have had our now traditional Beer and Skittles evening and have kept up with our charitable donations, including to the NSPCC One Stop Appeal. We ran a Jumble Sale in March and have made a successful bid for some financial help from the South Staffs Arts and Leisure Committee for money for publicity and for raising the profile of the Singers. Our main concerts at Christmas - our Annual Carol Concert, our experimental Spring Concert in April and our Millennium Concert with the local schools were all most successful. The Web Site is beginning to develop nicely now and things are looking good for the future.
18th March 2000, 7.30pm - The Brewood Singers Beer & Skittles Evening
One of our popular social evenings is the Beer & Skittles at 'The Swan', Brewood. If only I'd remembered, there would have been some photographs here. We had two games of skittles:
The first game was won by Marianne Smiles (for the Ladies), and 'skittle puttaa uppaa' Thomas Brookes (for the Gentlemen). They each won a bottle of wine and a lottery ticket. The 'booby prizes' were won by none other than my wife, Carol Brookes (for the Ladies), and me, David Brookes (for the Gentlemen)! We each won a packet of Skittles, which fortunately kept our two-year-old daughter, Anna, amused for most of the rest of the evening.
The second game - the one where we each have three lives and where you lose a life if you fail to knock down a skittle - was won by Don Charnell, who walked away with the pot of money.
A really good time was had by all. Thanks to 'The Swan' for having us and to Pat Mumford, our secretary, for arranging the evening.
For those reading this who were at the Beer & Skittles Evening, please let me know if I have missed out any information and will edit the above for the more serious comments or add other 'facts' below. Please e-mail me or if you're brave, write it as a comment in the Guestbook.
Extra Facts:
Fact 1: Pat Mumford can bowl slightly better when accompanied by a rendition of 'Vilia'.
Fact 2: The Singers did not feel inspired to sing 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' after an evening of beer & skittles!
Fact 3: The Singers can sing 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' usually!
24th February 2000 - The Singers make donation to N.S.P.C.C.
The Brewood Singers present a cheque for £284 to the N.S.P.C.C. Full Stop Campaign. This money was raised during our annual 'Carol Singing Around the Pubs', just before Christmas and was supplemented by money donated in lieu of sending Christmas cards.

8th April 2000 - The Brewood Singers and K & J Male Voice Choir in Concert, Jubilee Hall Brewood.
On Saturday 8th April, the Brewood Singers got together with the K & J Male Voice Choir to put on a selection of music, old and new, in the Jubilee Hall Brewood. The Brewood Singers decided to put on the concert to do something a little bit special for the Millennium. The Singers last did a joint concert with the K & J Male Voice Choir back in 1994, when the Singers were asked as their guests for a concert for Lupus Research, in Penkridge.
The Brewood Singers performed: The Whistling Gypsy, Everything I Do I Do It For You, Love Changes Everything, Wind Beneath My Wings, Home and the Heartland, My Heart Will Go On, Blowin' in the Wind, Five Hundred Miles, My Love is Like a Red Red Rose, Alexander's Ragtime Band. Hilary Riley enhanced the Singers performances by playing the flute for two songs. The K & J Male Voice Choir performed: A Cole Porter Medley, I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen, The Rhythm Of Life, Jamaica Farewell, When The Saints Go Marchin' In, Here's That Rainy Day, Bring Him Home, Last Of The Summer Wine, Betty Grable. The Soloists were Amanda Manley, who sang: I Dreamed A Dream (from Les Miserables), and Wendy Lamsdale, who sang: Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (from Showboat). Mike Butler read the story of Sam who tried to sell Noah the maple wood to build the ark, at: Three Ha'pence a Foot, and the Ladies Barbershop (Maggie Bailey, Ros Butterworth, Hilary Riley and Pam Shannon) sang: Music, Music, Music, and Somebody Stole My Gal. The evening was rounded off by the raffle, a Vote of Thanks given by David Brookes, and the two choirs who together sang: All In The April Evening, and The Impossible Dream. The K & J Male Voice Choir was conducted by Jim Walker and was accompanied by John Kirk. The Brewood Singers were conducted by David Brookes and accompanied by Lee Haddock.
The Concert was very well attended, but we just had enough room to seat people comfortably. It was a most successful experiment. The evening was enjoyed immensely by performers and audience alike.
May 2000 - Singers receive Arts Grant
The Brewood Singers wish to thank South Staffordshire Arts Development for the grant of £340 in order to purchase a portable noticeboard to take to concerts in order to raise awareness of the Singers about our achievements (what we do etc.) and for publicity.
8th July 2000 - Millennium Festival Concert in the Parish Church of St Mary & St Chad, Brewood: The Brewood Singers with choirs from the Local Schools.
On Saturday 8th July, the Brewood Singers got together with the choirs from the local schools in Brewood to put on a selection of music in the Church of St Mary & Chad, Brewood. This concert was a little bit of an experiment and no one really knew how it would go. We had one joint rehearsal for the finale a week before the concert with those who could make it. When it came to the night of the concert we really had little idea if we would have much of an audience at all. Gradually people began to arrive - and arrive - and arrive. By 7.30pm the Brewood Singers noticeboard, which I had placed in a prominent position at the back of the church had been moved and the churchwardens were busily ferrying extra chairs from Church House and elsewhere. It was packed - not just by performers, but by a huge audience. I suspect Brewood Church had not been as full for some time! It was wonderful to see so many people.
The concert itself went very well and so many people expressed their appreciation. Everyone performed so well and the performance of the finale - "Any Dream Will Do" from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat - with all performers from St Dominic's School Choir, St Mary RC School Choir, St Mary & Chad's School Choir, Brewood Middle School Choir and the Brewood Singers - will stay as a vivid memory in our minds for a long time.
The success of the concert enabled the Singers to donate £200 towards church funds, and £50 to each school (£200), as well as to adequately cover publicity and expenses and to add something to the Singers bank balance. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to publish the photograph on the web site, as it would obviously be difficult to obtain permission from all the performers.
A big 'thank you' to all the schools for taking part. It will be a night we will remember for a long time.
