Summer Show "Way Out West" (Friday 16th & Saturday 17th June 1978, Jubilee Hall, Brewood

Concert at Featherstone Prison (Wednesday 21st June 1978)
I joined the Singers in January 1978 as Musical Director. Plans were discussed for the Summer Show and it was agreed to base the music on a Western theme. Some of the Singers might remember my first concert with the Singers at Goodyear Social Club on March 22nd when we sang a short selection of songs after the bingo session - a good number of the audience came by coach but unfortunately the coach came to take the audience home while we were in full flight!
Our Summer Show on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th June, in the Jubilee Hall was, as planned, on a Western theme, and was titled "Way Out West". The music all went to plan - we had John Hendley as out Guest Artist. In the second half things did not run so smoothly. For contrast, we decided to stage a short sketch - "Wells Fargo" by Peter Cagney. Some of you will remember Jessie James (Ian Brammall) who had to shoot a gun. Unfortunately it did not fire - instead after purveying the malfunctioning apparatus for a few moments, he held the gun out one final time -the audience waited - and Jesse James shouted 'bang' as his victim fell to the floor in laughter, mirrored by a similar reaction from the rest of the group and audience! There was not a dry eye in the place!! By the way, admission was by programme - 50p (Children 25p)
A few days later (Wednesday 21st June) we sang a selection of our western music at Featherstone Prison. On reflection 'Take Me Home Country Roads' and 'The Deadwood Stage' were not the best choices to sing at the prison, but they seemed to enjoy it.
